Cali, the photographer

Cali Gilbert began taking photos as a young girl, but soon began to develop her talents amongst her many travel adventures. Having spanned the globe for 30 years, Cali soon realized she loved to capture frames that inspired her and others. One of her favourite mediums became black & white architecture. Cali tested this medium in 1998 while spending the summer abroad in Europe. She would capture photos of historical buildings throughout Europe in colour and then in black & white. She loved the detail that transpired through the black & white photograph.
Cali also decided to photograph nature, musical performances and athletes. As a former athlete, she had ample opportunity to capture photographs at figure skating events she covered as a journalist following her own skating career. She also decided to shoot ice hockey, baseball, tennis, and surfing.
Throughout the years, Cali had been encouraged by others to do something with her photography, yet she viewed her work as a hobby and nothing more. It wasn't until 2009 when she finally decided to take a chance. In conjunction with the 2009 Sausalito Art Festival, local residents were encouraged to submit pieces of art for display. A jury pool selected a number of pieces to go on exhibit. Cali decided to submit a piece, but unfortunately it was not selected.
In 2010, Cali decided to try again. She decided to submit the same piece as in 2009, but this time had better luck. The theme for the exhibit was the "Art of Peace" and Cali's photograph, 'Human Nature' was a perfect fit. The 16x20 black & white photograph went on display at the Bay Model Visitor's Center in Sausalito, CA for three weeks in conjuction with the 2010 Sausalito Art Festival. Cali received rave reviews from visitors to the exhibit and decided she should launch her first collection.
In 2011 Cali had her work exhibited nationally across America with the Peace Project Exhibit organized by the Whole9 organization to benefit the people of Sierra Leone. Cali's piece 'Human Nature' was exhibited in galleries across America including Los Angeles and New York City. In 2012, Cali's work was once again selected to be part of the Peace Project Exhibit. Her piece 'Love Birds' was exhibited across America in galleries that began in Dallas, TX in September, 2012 and concluded in Oakland, CA on February 1, 2013. In the fall of 2013, for the third straight year, one of Cali's pieces was again selected for the Peace Project Exhibit. This time it was a piece entitled, 'Peaceful Awakening' that graced the walls of galleries across the United States beginning in San Francisco in October, 2013 and ended in Los Angeles at the end of the year.
Cali re-located to Los Angeles, CA at the end of 2013 and continues to capture inspirational images from behind her lens. She is excited about showing off her work to art lovers in Southern California and hopes to host her own exhibits in the coming year.
